About Houston Grand Opera (HGO)
Houston Grand Opera (HGO) is one of the largest, most innovative and most highly acclaimed opera companies in the United States. HGO was the only American finalist for Opera Company of the Year at the 2017 International Opera Awards. Our mission is to advance the operatic art to serve an ever-evolving audience. We will produce great operatic works that create and sustain a new American art form and fuse them with historical repertoire to inspire the next generations of opera lovers–both in our own community and globally through technology.
Are you a fundraising professional with a successful track record of inspiring donors? Do you know the joy of connecting supporters to a mission they believe in?
As HGO’s Associate Director of Development for Acquisitions, not only will you enjoy that thrill yourself, you’ll show your colleagues how to experience it along with you.
HGO is looking for an inspiring development leader to join our growing team. If you passionately believe in the power of great art, have solid fundraising experience, and are ready to lead a team of high-performing development officers, then do we have a job for you!
HGO’s performances are irresistibly great and the donors you’ll meet here are the best ones in town. And if you wind up a full-blown opera junkie, don’t say you weren’t warned.
As Associate Director of Development, you’ll be responsible for spearheading HGO’s Acquisitions Team. You will lead a team of two development officers, hungry to identify new potential donors within the many subscribers in our audience and help them to grow our donor family.
The officers on your team will comb through our audience one subscriber at a time, emailing and calling them regularly to set face to face discovery visits to learn their passions and interests, along with their ability and likelihood to support the opera.
Once qualified, you will help your officers develop the best cultivation plan for each potential donor and, when the time is right, the ideal solicitation for each one.
You will quickly meet and familiarize yourself with our current Trustees and Patrons, in order to leverage their involvement with HGO to help your team acquire new supporters. Our donors love being asked for help, and we aren’t shy asking them for it!
At the same time, you will be responsible for your own portfolio of 75 Patrons ($5,000+) and Trustee-level ($10,000+) donors with significant capacity to increase their support. You’ll be out of the office on Day One, meeting them, qualifying their interests and full giving potential and developing and executing plans to help realize it.
We want talent. We want it on our stage, we want it on our Board and we want it on our staff.
Your team will keep you on your toes. They are hard-working, enthusiastic, inspiring and deeply believe in the power of their work to change lives. Please demonstrate an understanding of and a passion for delivery (and leading others to deliver) top-notch customer service.
You’ll need an undergraduate degree and at least five years of nonprofit fundraising or sales experience and supervisory experience.
Some evening and weekend work is required, entertaining donors at performances. Did we mention the world-class opera performances? All of that is included in HGO’s competitive benefits package.
We are looking for more than a mere manager. This position requires a true leader. An ideal candidate will be an empathetic and sensitive colleague, able to anticipate the needs and preferred management style each team member needs to thrive.
Be creative. You’d be joining a world-class opera company, so creativity is at the core of everything we do, including fundraising. You should relish finding outside-the-box ways to attract new potential donors, manage your team and thank existing supporters for their generosity and much more.
Be curious. The donors to HGO are fascinating. They live interesting lives and have unbelievable stories to share. Learn everything you can about them so you can make them feel special at every turn.
Don’t be afraid of asking for money. Celebrate doing it every chance you get. You should enjoy the rush that comes from connecting donors with the causes they care about so deeply. You are allowing them to experience the thrill of giving.
Our subscribers love opera. So if you know everything there is to know about it, that’s great. But if you don’t know anything about it, that’s okay too. You soon will.
Opera is the most collaborative art form known to man. It combines poetry, dance, music, acting, singing, set-building, orchestras, choruses and so much more. So no matter what you’re into, there’s a seat for you at our table. Just bring the appetite for learning.
And perhaps more than anything, bring your positivity, your enthusiasm and your excitement for making the world a better place through opera. Your work and the work of your team changes lives each and every day. That’s something to celebrate!
HGO’s development team has a proven track record of attracting, nurturing and launching the careers of many in our profession. This team is no joke.
Your colleagues are the real benefits package. You will learn from your leaders and coworkers in a truly collaborative environment where you are encouraged to do work that interests and challenges you. We rarely say no. Share your ideas — go for it!
