About Houston Grand Opera (HGO)
Houston Grand Opera (HGO) is one of the largest, most innovative and most highly acclaimed opera companies in the United States. HGO was the only American finalist for Opera Company of the Year at the 2017 International Opera Awards. Our mission is to advance the operatic art to serve an ever-evolving audience. We will produce great operatic works that create and sustain a new American art form and fuse them with historical repertoire to inspire the next generations of opera lovers–both in our own community and globally through technology.

Position Summary
Do you love music? Do you want to make a difference in this world every day when you go to work? Do you enjoy spending time with and learning about different types of people? Unique, even quirky people?

HGO is looking for a talented development officer to join our growing team. If you know how to work hard, have a fun, positive attitude and love connecting donors with the greatest art form every created, do we have a job for you!

But before you click “apply,” you should be warned… opera is highly addictive.

HGO’s performances are irresistibly great and the donors you’ll meet here are the best ones in town. And if you wind up a full-blown opera junkie, don’t say you weren’t warned.

Primary Responsibilities
As a Development Officer at HGO, you’ll be responsible for reaching out to hundreds of fascinating opera subscribers throughout the season, trying to visit with them, learning and recording their HGO stories and when the time is right, inviting them into our donor family.

Actually, you’ll meet more audience members than anyone else on our team.

Very quickly, you’ll walk down the aisle of the Brown Theater before HGO performances, greeting many friendly faces, and feeling the deep satisfaction that you brought them closer to the amazing art they are about to experience. You did that.

So if you like sitting being a desk, filling out spreadsheets and looking at database, look elsewhere. This is NOT the job for you.

At HGO, we know development is best done face to face, not in your office. The more time you spend with current and potential donors, the better.

We want talent. We want it on our stage, we want it on our Board and we want it on our staff.

Your team will keep you on your toes. They are hard-working, enthusiastic, inspiring and deeply believe in the power of their work to change lives. Please demonstrate an understanding of and a passion for delivery (and leading others to deliver) top-notch customer service.

You’ll need an undergraduate degree and at least a few years of work experience. Development experience is ideal, though not needed. Commensurate skills can be substituted.

Some evening and weekend work is required, entertaining donors at performances. Did we mention the world-class opera performances? All of that is included in HGO’s competitive benefits package.

Necessary Skills
You’ve gotta be organized for this job. You’re managing outreach to hundreds of folks each year, and they don’t all get back to you at the same time. You’re documenting visits in donor files, planning special invitations around performances, follow-up and much more.

Be curious about everything. You’ll ask questions. Tons of questions. Our audience has a lot to say and trust us, you want to hear it. Learn their life story, what they love about the opera, how they got involved with HGO — whatever you can. The more you download about them, the better you can plan to engage them more deeply with HGO. Then, go forth and conquer!

And perhaps more than anything, be self-motivated. There’s always more money to raise, more people to meet, more asks to make. If you want great work opportunities, we have them.

Our subscribers love opera. So if you know everything there is to know about it, that’s great. But if you don’t know anything about it, that’s okay too. You soon will.

Opera is the most collaborative art form known to man. It combines poetry, dance, music, acting, singing, set-building, orchestras, choruses and so much more. So no matter what you’re into, there’s a seat for you at our table. Just bring the appetite for learning.

Why HGO?
HGO’s development team has a proven track record of attracting, nurturing and launching the careers of many in our profession. This team is no joke.

Your colleagues are the real benefits package. You will learn from your leaders and coworkers in a truly collaborative environment where you are encouraged to do work that interests and challenges you. We rarely say no. Share your ideas — go for it!
