Position Summary
The Director of Advancement is a full-time, 12-month (July 1 – June 30) administrative position reporting directly to the Head of School. The Director of Advancement is responsible for providing leadership and strategic advancement of the School’s Mission through the school’s development, enrollment/admission, and communication departments, to include: annual fund, capital and major gift campaigns, planned giving, strategic and operational communications, admissions and enrollment management. The Director of Advancement will work in partnership with Trustees and participates in the policy-making of the School as a member of the senior administrative team.

General Duties:

      • Communicate internally and externally a broad understanding and awareness of the FVS mission and programs
      • Represent the Advancement interest at the senior administrative level and develop priorities and strategies for the School
      • Organize and communicate broadly that everything we do is directed at increasing donor support and enrollment while advancing Fountain Valley School
      • Work with the Head of School at implementation of head’s goals and vision for the institution

Management of the Development Program:

      • Supervise the raising of adequate funds for current operations, special projects and capital growth
      • Oversee the annual Development Plan, including but not limited to: annual fund, capital campaigns, major gift initiatives, and planned gifts in concert with the current Strategic & Master Plans
      • Oversee annual budget that is directly linked with the priorities of the department and the institution
      • In conjunction with the Director of Development, determine annual fundraising goals
      • In conjunction with the Director of Development and Head of School, identify, cultivate, and steward major donors and manage a portfolio of prospects
      • In conjunction with the Director of Development, review annually the funds raised and develop strategies for increasing annual fundraising goals

Management of the Admission/Enrollment Program:

      • Supervise the Director of Admission in the successful enrollment and matriculation of mission appropriate students
      • In conjunction with the Director of Admission, recommend enrollment goals and develop annual enrollment plan for the fiscal year to the senior administrative team, working in concert with the current Strategic & Master Plans
      • In conjunction with the Director of Admission, oversee the annual budget that is directly linked with the priorities of the department and the institution
      • In conjunction with the Director of Admission, increase inquiries, applications, and matriculation of mission appropriate students
      • In conjunction with the Director of Admission, review annually the enrollment process and develop strategies for achieving and increasing annual goals

Management of the Communication Program:

      • In conjunction with the Director of Marketing and Storytelling, plan and implement a comprehensive, long-range marketing plan with annual review and evaluation
      • Together with the Directors of Admission, Communications, and Development determine strategy, plan, focus and markets with annual review
      • Oversee all electronic communications and website for Fountain Valley School with the Director of Marketing & Storytelling
      • Supervise the planning and production of all external School publications (The Bulletin, annual report, campaign collateral, videos, etc.) with the Director of Marketing and Storytelling

Board of Trustees:

      • Attend all Board of Trustee meetings
      • Oversee the preparation of comprehensive Board Reports by members of the Admission, Communication and Development Teams
      • In conjunction with the Director of Development, staff all Committee on Trustee meetings and provide all data needed for the recruitment and orientation of new trustees

Supervisory Responsibilities:

      • Ensure teamwork and collaboration among and across the Departments. Regular meetings of full staffs, briefings that include reports from meetings with Head, Board of Trustees and other senior administrators
      • Supervising, setting direction and supporting goals for each member of the Admission, Communication and Development Teams. Ensure that the job descriptions for each member of the staff are clear and that annual reviews take place for the benefit of the staff member and the department
      • Supervise the staff in a manner which will maximize their individual talents and encourage professional growth
      • Align culture of predictability, support and philanthropy with that of the School

Other Duties:

      • Member of the senior administrative team
      • Member of Administrator on Duty (AOD) team
      • Member of a weekend duty team
      • Dorm duty one night per week

Qualifications:

      • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
      • At least seven years of job related experience required
      • Experience in independent school setting (including boarding schools) highly desirable
      • Ability to effectively interface with constituents in a school environment (faculty, staff, students), board members, alumni, and parents
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
      • Track record in managing and motivating staff and volunteers in a non-profit environment a plus
      • Meticulous organizational, project, and time management skills – must have strong ability and desire to multitask and meet deadlines
      • Outstanding skills and background in customer service and outreach expected
      • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
      • Willingness and ability to travel and work nights and weekends, as required
      • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Raiser’s Edge preferred
