Representatives of the Sam Houston Area Boy Scouts presented plans for the new Camp Strake in San Jacinto County at the first Coldspring/San Jacinto County Chamber of Commerce luncheon of the year on Jan. 19.
Originally located in Conroe, Camp Strake closed down in December 2014 after serving the Boy Scouts of America for 70 years. According to the representatives at the luncheon, the sale of the land was due to urban development and gang activity becoming a concern for its existence.
“We knew we needed to have a new home,” said Franklin.
In 2010, the Sam Houston Area Council began the process of moving Camp Strake to a new location more fitting for the Boy Scouts with the East Texas forest feel, eventually settling on Evergreen, Texas, in San Jacinto County.
“We’re very excited for San Jacinto County to be our new home for this property,” said Franklin.
