Tobin Center for Performing Arts Receives Large Gift from Mays Family

The Mays Family Foundation contributed $1.25 million on Wednesday to the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts capital campaign.

The Mays family, including Lowry Mays, co-founder of Clear Channel Communications Inc., has a long history with San Antonio’s Municipal Auditorium, which is being transformed into the new Tobin Center.

The Bexar County Performing Arts Center Foundation, which was established to own and operate the new downtown venue, has committed to raise $54 million from the private sector. The Tobin Endowment made a $15 million challenge grant, and that challenge has been met, with well over $39 million in private funds already committed to the project — not counting this latest gift.

The original front portion of the Municipal Auditorium, which will be part of the new performing arts center, will be known as the Mays Family Historic Facade and Foyer.

Tobin officials have established a Wall of Memories campaign in an effort to collect memorabilia tied to the Municipal Auditorium.
